| About Bikes for the World - Bikes for the World works hard every day, not just Earth Month, to bring you an alternative to adding to our landfills. We work closely with several recycling facilities in the area along with police departments, bike shops, condos, and individuals like YOU to keep unwanted bicycles out of our trash cans and into the hands of people who can use them. We are proud of the work we do and proud of you for supporting us. Just in the DC area alone, we rescue close to 10,000 bikes every year. That's 10,000 bikes that would have otherwise ended up in recycling facilities, trash dumps, or even river beds. What else do we do? Well if that's not enough, we also recycle whenever we can. We help bike shops either reuse, repurpose, or recycle what their customers no longer need...bikes, tubes, tires, parts, scrap metal... What we can't ship we flip! Spokes become necklaces and key chains. Tires become belts. Tubes reappear as purses, pouches, bungee cords, even rubberbands. Some we reuse right in the office and some we sell at events to help raise funds to meet our mission of providing bikes overseas. We also consider our carbon footprint on the road. We ride our bikes when we can. We work from home. We even have several storage sites to cut back on the amount of driving we have to do after collections. And if you've ever seen us pack a container, you know every trip overseas is using every inch of space. |
